Can dance & fitness really release your stress?

I could sit here and copy every quote or expression found on the Internet today from articles and/or blogs speaking about what dancing can do to release your stress, but you would have a lot of reading to do! So, I’d just like to share with you one that I love reading any time I need to release my stress.

“Dancing can be magical and transforming. It can breathe new life into a tired soul; make a spirit soar; unleash locked-away creativity; unite generations and cultures; inspire new romances or rekindle old ones; trigger long-forgotten memories; and turn sadness into joy, if only during the dance.” – AARP Magazine

At RhythmX, we have our instructors and our students.  They all have their problems, their own stressful situations.  As instructors with full time jobs, with children, with bills, etc., there are times where we have a very bad day and come to class to teach with that bad day on our shoulders. As soon as we see our students, as soon as we hear that music, we transform.  It is incredible what dancing and music does to our brain and our soul.  We forget all of our problems our aches and pains and we just dance.

Here are a few of my favorite stress-releasing memories as a dance fitness instructor:

  • I remember one day walking towards class looking down to the floor and complaining to my son how tired I was from carrying the stress from long week of unfortunate events and how I had no idea how I was going to lead that Zumba class.  When I look up, I see a beautiful couple in their late 70s who were smiling from ear to ear as they noticed their Zumba instructor walking towards class.  That smile filled me up with joy and an energy that helped me forget all of my problems and my pains and I taught the happiest and most super-energized class that day!
  • I was living with my son at a mother-in-law type house, renting it from people I did not know.  I remember it was a Thursday when while at my full time job, I get a call from my landlord telling me she needed that room back that night because a friend had an emergency and needed the room for her friend.  I had a Zumba class that night at 7pm.  I remember stressing out about where was I going to go, how was I to get all my things in my car to another location in one night, what was I going to do with my son.  It was crazy.  As soon as I get to class and turned on that music I totally forgot about what was coming.  I got so much energy from the class, I went to the room, packed my car to the max and moved that night to a friend’s house.  It took a few trips but my Zumba class helped me feel better.
  • There have been times where my fellow instructors and I haven’t felt well due to unexpected headaches, stomachaches, etc. or just simply not be in right mindset to teach right before class. However, once we see the beautiful, smiling faces of our students and hear our music, we forget about everything and leave our stresses at the door. It is amazing how the atmosphere at RhythmX – the music,  the lighting, the people can completely turn our mood around.
  • For our students dancing is a social activity and for some an exercise regimen. Socializing with friends helps our self-esteem and gives us a positive outlook on life. Dancing helps increase self-confidence and builds social skills. Because physical activity releases stress and tension, dancing gives an overall sense of well-being.  Dancing at RhythmX has become a stress releasing hobby more than just an exercise regimen for some people.  Our students express their creativity and their personalities through dance; taking their minds off of all their worries by enjoying themselves.

At the end of the day studies show that dancing in general improves mental functioning and improves general and psychological well-being. Let us help you achieve stress release at RhythmX through our dance and fitness classes.
